Several Georgia teams head to basketball’s Final Four this weekend

And then there were six – six area teams still in the running for Georgia state basketball titles after beating teams in the Elite Eight in games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Advancing to the Final Four are Grovetown after defeating Wheeler 82-76 in overtime Tuesday, Josey’s Lady Eagles  the defending state champions, who won their Elite Eight matchup against Fannin County 61-53 Tuesday, Cross Creek’s boys team who beat Groves 55-46 Wednesday; Westside who defeated Early County 77-36 Wednesday; Butler who beat Washington County 51-41 Wednesday; and Thomson who scored a victory over Johnson of Savannah 79-66.

Westside plays Northeast at 4 p.m. Friday and Butler plays Woodville-Tompkins at 8 p.m. Friday at Georgia State College and University. Should the Patriots and Bulldogs win their Final Four games, they would meet in the AA state title game slated for 3 p.m. March 10 at the Macon Coliseum.

Other Final Four pairings include Grovetown against Langston Hughes at 8 p.m. Saturday at University of West Georgia; Josey versus Elbert County at 2 p.m. Friday at Georgia State College and University; Cross Creek against Beach at 8 p.m. Saturday at Georgia State College and University. Thomson plays Windsor-Forest at 4 p.m. March 5 at Georgia College and State University. Should Thomson and Cross Creek win in the Final Four, the two would meet each other at 3 p.m. Friday, March 11 at the Macon Coliseum.

Losing in the Elite Eight were Burke County to Beach in a close one 56-52 Tuesday; Cross Creek’s girls’ team to Lumpkin County 49-39 Tuesday; Laney girls team to Northeast 85-52 Wednesday.
