Sex offender shot dead in Augusta on Friday

The Richmond County Coroner’s Office is investigating a shooting death that occurred on Friday, June 14.

According to Mark Bowen, Richmond County coroner, the incident took place on the 2800 block of Waterside Drive. The victim, identified as Edward Goins, 53, of Augusta, was shot at least once and taken to Wellstar/MCG. Goins was pronounced dead at 1:08 p.m. on Saturday, June 15.

According to the Georgia Sex Offender Registry, Goins was convicted in 2004 of aggravated child molestation.

An autopsy has been scheduled.
