An Augusta man charged with a December sexual assault was granted a $30,000 bond Friday.
Leon McQuaker, 28, was charged with rape after the alleged victim told law enforcement he forced himself on her at his house. He had taken her there to get marijuana, then took her home after the incident, prosecutors said.
McQuaker’s defense attorney said the two had been exchanging vanishing messages on SnapChat about a “discreet meeting” that would exonerate him. The former T.W. Josey High School football standout played Division 1 football at New Mexico State, cooperated with police when they arrived and has custody of his two-year-old son, he said.
Multiple friends and family members, as well as his employer, appeared in Richmond County Superior Court Friday to support McQuaker. Judge Ashley Wright noted he has a pending sentencing on an unrelated drug charge later this month but granted him a $30,000 bond on the rape charge.
