Sergeant Evan Scureman has been named as the Augusta Fire Department’s 2025 Firefighter of the Year after 12 years of service within the department.

A surprise announcement
Sgt. Scureman was officially recognized as firefighter of the year on Feb. 6, when the news was announced during a surprise food delivery by Walmart to Augusta Fire Department Station #1.
He had just been informed of the honor earlier that day.
“It was humbling, but also an honor to be able to, kind of, get that type of recognition for you know, what I consider to just sort of be doing my job,” said Sgt. Scureman when asked about his initial reaction upon learning the news.
Sgt. Scureman also said that he had “no idea” that he would be publicly celebrated when the superstore made their appearance.
Over a decade of service
Sgt. Scureman joined the department in 2012, starting at Station #17 as a Firefighter I. He advanced to Sergeant on Aerial Truck 1, where he has served for 11 years.
He has additionally been named a Hometown Hero by the Masters Tournament Outreach Program. In honor of his contributions, he and a guest have been invited to attend the 2025 Masters Tournament and will attend the Augusta National Hometown Heroes Reception.
He also received a congratulatory letter from Senator Jon Ossoff.
“We owe America’s public safety officers the very best. Those who have endured danger and hardship – at the expense of their safety, health, and time with their loved ones – have earned our country’s gratitude and support,” the letter said.
