Shoot out on Ellis Street ends in subject death

A shoot out this morning on Ellis Street in Augusta left one subject dead and sent a Richmond County deputy to the hospital.

At 11:23 a.m., Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a call about a subject with a gun at the 1200 block of Ellis Street. During the incident, a deputy and the subject were both shot at least one time. The deputy was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The subject, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:46 p.m., according to Coroner Mark Bowen.  An autopsy has been scheduled.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested due to the nature of the incident. The GBI responded and assumed the investigation.

This investigation is on-going, and the Richmond County SheOffice says no further information will be provided at this time.
