Shooting death under investigation at Aiken hotel

A woman was found dead Monday morning at the American Hearth Inn, located on Richland Avenue West, after an apparent shooting.

Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables confirmed that the Coroner’s Office was called to the scene at 5 a.m. Monday to investigate. Law enforcement had received a report of shots fired around 4:41 a.m. When officers arrived, they discovered the body of an unidentified female in one of the hotel rooms. She had suffered at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:15 a.m.

The victim has been identified as Nyasia Dowling, 25, of Aiken. An autopsy will be performed in Newberry.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident, with assistance from the Coroner’s Office.
