Sims Brown to run for chief judge of Richmond County Magistrate Court

Carletta Sims Brown, the chief judge of the Richmond County Civil and Magistrate Court, announced Thursday, Jan. 6, that she will run for election this year to keep the office.

Sims Brown was appointed by the governor in April 2021 to fill the unexpired term of Chief Judge William D. Jennings III who died while in office. Gov. Brian Kemp choose Sims Brown over several potential candidates for the job.

Sims Brown has practiced law since earning her degree in 1987 from Marquette University School of Law. She previously served for nearly two years as a magistrate judge in Cobb County where she also served as an assistant county attorney. In addition to private practice, Sims Brown served as a solicitor for Union City.

Sims Brown was in private practice in Augusta from May 2017 until her judicial appointment last year. She will face challenger Katrell Nash in the May 24 primary and Nov. 8 general election. Both are running as Democratic candidates.
