A large sinkhole has opened on Walton Way. A crew of utilities workers could be found Thursday morning surrounding collapsed portion of the road at the intersection of Walton Way and the entrance to the Windsor Court neighborhood, across the street from Langford Middle School.

The city utilities and construction engineering departments are currently investigating the site alongside a contractor, notes Augusta public information officer Leandra Collins, chiefly to both find a source of the depression and develop a plan for repairs. Mending the chasm in the street might take a day or two, says Collins, as workers seek to examine the area without causing further damage.

“We can’t do any digging until we get someone in here to determine what other resources we have underground,” said Collins. “[We’re] making sure we don’t hit anything else, a gas pipe or anything electrical. So we’ve got to wait for them. We can’t dig too far until we make sure that we’re in the right place.”

The city has not yet determined the size of the sinkhole. This story will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
