Skechers is coming to Augusta, just in time for Christmas.

The designer athletic footwear and apparel company is opening a new location this week at the Augusta Square shopping center at the intersection of Wrightsboro and Wylds roads.

The company, based in Manhattan Beach, Calif., was founded in 1992 by Robert Greenberg, who had started the sneaker brand L.A. Gear nine years prior. At that time, Skechers was only one of two U.S. shoe distributors that carried Doc Martens, the British leather work boot brand that had become fashionable, particularly for the early 90’s punk and grunge scenes.

Now, Skechers has several casual, sport and work footwear brands under its name, including brand collaborations ranging from John Deer to Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart. Calling itself the “Comfort Technology Company” in its marketing, the company touts the incorporation of various product enhancements in its shoes, such as air-cooled memory foam.

The new Augusta store will be one of more than 560 locations in the U.S., and over 5,000 worldwide, and the 13th in Georgia.

Skechers Augusta, located at 3412 Wrightsboro Road, will open on Thursday. Its hours will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday.
