Solvay Specialty Polymers plant and new Olive Garden on the Augusta Planning Commission agenda

A chemical plant in the Miracle Mile Neighborhood, a new restaurant and a store off Riverwatch Parkway are among the more than 20 items the Augusta Planning Commission is scheduled to address in its monthly meeting Monday afternoon.

Solvay Specialty Polymers is currently in the process of acquiring five parcels of land, totaling some 86 acres, from the Welychem Corp. for its expansion.

The property, along Clanton Road and Forward Augusta Drive, is slated to be the site of a new facility to manufacture polymers integral to producing electric vehicle batteries.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced in October its federal grant of more than $178 million, the funds coming from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to Solvay toward building the plant.  Solay estimates that its project will bring about 500 construction jobs and 100 permanent jobs to Augusta.

The company has requested a special exception to construct the manufacturing facility at the location, already zoned Heavy Industrial, just south of Solvay’s existing plant on Tobacco Road.

A request by Darden Restaurants, the owner of Olive Garden, for permission to build a new franchise at the Village of Riverwatch, at 804 Cabela Dr. Bo Slaughter of James G. Swift & Associates has submitted a similar request for a neighboring parcel at 814 Cabela Dr. Both locations are zoned Light Industrial.

Several rezoning requests for proposed developments are on the commission’s agenda

LDG Development’s request to rezone 12 acres along Windsor Spring Rd. for a three-story apartment complex is returning for consideration after being tabled.

Another proposed apartment complex, consisting of 20 two and three-story buildings holding some 600 residential units, is the subject of a rezoning request from Hillpointe LLC, also returning after being tabled in September. Hillpointe aims to rezone about 44 acres along the intersection of Gordon Highway and Highway 520 from General Business to Multi-family Residential.
