A Stallings Island Middle School student has been charged with cutting another student during school Wednesday.
According to a letter from Vicki Tarleton, the school principal, sent to parents, “a teacher was alerted that a student was in possession of a retractable breakaway blade, before the start of the first class of the day. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the student intentionally used the blade to cut the hand of another student that was seated next to them. No other students were injured or threatened, and the blade was confiscated by the teacher, without further incident.”
The student “has been criminally charged by law enforcement, and removed from the school campus,” the letter continued. “The student will also be held accountable according to the Columbia County School District Code of Conduct.”
Tarleton stated that the safety of students and staff is a “top priority” and urged parents to speak with their children “to ensure that they understand that weapons of any kind are strictly forbidden on campus, and the serious consequences that come with bringing inappropriate items to school.”
And she encouraged students to report any suspicious behavior to an adult, administrator of the district’s anonymous tip hotline (706) 541-3600.
