The Strom Thurmond Rebels secured the 2025 Class AA State Championship on Saturday, Dec. 6, with a commanding 26-7 victory over the Hampton County Hurricanes at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. The win capped a remarkable 13-2 season and brought the state football title back to Johnston for the first time in 20 years.
The victory was a textbook display of the Rebels’ physical style, powered by the ground game and a disruptive defense.

Phillips and defense lead the way
The Strom Thurmond offense was anchored by senior running back Deonte Phillips, who steamrolled the Hurricanes’ defense for 149 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Bri’Shaun Lee was efficient, throwing for 126 yards and two scores, including touchdown passes to wide receivers Kaleb Simpkins and Shaheed Williams.
On defense, the unit shut down Hampton County, holding them to just one score all game. The Rebels’ secondary was stellar, registering three interceptions, including two by senior cornerback Jalin Collins.
Coach Andrew Webb praises seniors
Head Coach Andrew Webb praised his team’s unwavering focus following their championship win. Despite an emotional win last week, he and the team knew there was a mindset they needed to have.
“We celebrated last week’s victory… but on Monday when we showed up it was job not finished,” said Webb.
Webb gave a ton of praise to seniors of his team. “They are the best players, they are our best leaders, they are our best teachers,” he said.
For the first time since 2005, Strom Thurmond will be able to enjoy the off season as champions and will no doubt be a season that the players and coaches never forget
