Student struck while crossing street

Date: October 31, 2022

A 14 year-old female student was struck by a vehicle while she was crossing the street near Evans High School on Cox Road at Knight’s Way Monday.

A 16 year-old was driving a Toyota Tundra traveling north on Cox Road. The driver attempted to make a left turn and failed to see the pedestrian, according to an email from Maj. Steve Morris of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

“The pedestrian was knocked to the ground. On scene, she had visible head injuries and was unconscious, but did start to wake up when they were loading her up to go to Doctors Hospital,” the email said. “Fire rescue and EMS at the scene said it appeared to be serious.”

However in a follow up email Morris said,

“The staff at Doctors said nothing was life threatening,” he wrote

The driver of the truck was cited for failure to yield to pedestrian in a crosswalk and improper turn.

“At this time, school operations will continue as normal, however, additional school counselors will be available for students or staff who may be impacted by this incident,” according to an email from Columbia County school district spokeswoman Abbigail Remkus.
