Members of the Aiken Sunrise Rotary Club, including school district Superintendent King Laurence, brought boxes of dictionaries to Warrenville Elementary School on Dec. 10.
The books were distributed to third graders by Laurence and Dee Broome, president of the service club.

For Broome, it was a continuation of her community involvement as a teacher.
“When I retired, I wanted to continue to serve, and Rotary provided that for me,” she said. “It allowed me to be a part of our community and provide for others in any possible way that we can help because I feel strongly that’s what we’re here for, is to help others.”

School principal Charlene Heard said community involvement like this is vital for her students.
“Because our community is a huge part of our family at Warrenville Elementary,” she said. “The fact that they give us things such as dictionaries that can be utilized to provide more assistance for our students for vocabulary instruction, so that students know how words are spelled, what they mean, that can assist them during their writing is very essential to our students.”

As students thumbed through their copies, Broome directed them to the table of contents. She asked students what interested them. Answers ranged from information on the planets, to weights and measures. One young boy was drawn to the page about American Sign Language because a family member is deaf.
“That is why we chose the dictionaries is because this one book can touch on so many different areas, that we are providing something for an interest to each child,” Broome explained.
Heard said they strive to get books into the hands of their students. It is a way to further enhance their reading and writing skills.
