Courtney Currie was perusing real estate listings last year and came across a space that she instantly had a vision for. That vision is now Sugar Magnolias, a social club and event venue located at 1020 Reynolds St.

“I’m a realtor, so I see homes going on the market every day,” Currie said. “I saw it and scheduled myself a showing with no intention of buying it. When I saw it, the whole vision came to me. I just saw the courtyard and how I would do things in the space — I just felt like I had to make it happen.”

Currie said she didn’t have to do any heavy renovations and that the structure was sound. Her first events took place early in 2021.

“You can host any kind of event there,” Currie said. “It’s a small, intimate venue. I’ve had everything from showers to weddings, all kinds of things. It’s an old, historic home, and it’s almost 150 years old. It’s got all the old Southern charm. Everybody that comes here tends to fall in love with it.”

On June 29, Currie will open her space up to a business market of sorts called Summer Mart.

Summer Mart is a collaboration between Currie and her friends at the Spray Bar for “an all women’s, brunch-themed pop-up shop” which takes place June 27. There are several women-owned and women-centric businesses committed to participating in the event, which is open to the public.

Augusta Girl Gang is also assisting, handling more of the marketing for the event in Currie’s space.

Currie hopes that this event will be a gateway to other pop-up events in the future.

“Our turnout is sounding great and depending on how it goes, we can start planning more events like this in the future,” said Currie.
