After an intense manhunt spanning over a week, authorities have arrested Bennelle Evans, the prime suspect in the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Gregory Campbell in Hephzibah.

Campbell was killed April 21 on the 300 block of Williamsburg Drive after being shot.  An extensive investigation by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division led to the identification of Evans as the suspect.

Evans, a resident of Augusta with a history of felony convictions, was sought on charges of murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

On Friday, authorities located Evans in McDuffie County and placed him under arrest. The successful apprehension was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the US Marshal’s Southeastern Task Force and the Georgia State Patrol.

Evans, who has a history of run-ins with the law dating back to his teenage years, has served multiple prison sentences for drug-related offenses and illegal firearm possession. Notably, he was previously implicated in bank robberies, leading to federal charges.
