A man was found dead early Tuesday morning near the sidewalk outside a vacant lot at 636 Crawford Avenue in Augusta, prompting a joint investigation by the Richmond County Coroner’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office.
According to Coroner Mark Bowen, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death. He was identified as 28-year-old Brandon Tompkins, a homeless man.
Lt. James Kelly of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the scene around 6:25 a.m. Tuesday in reference to a suspicious death. Investigators are actively working the case, but no further details have been released at this time.
