Suspicious package shuts down Gordon Highway — turns out to be soldier’s luggage

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office released this photo of their bomb squad responding to Thursday's false alarm.

Date: July 04, 2025

What began as a bomb scare near Fort Gordon on Thursday morning ended with a surprising twist — a simple case of misplaced luggage.

Around 10 a.m., the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called to the scene on Gordon Highway near Jimmie Dyess Parkway after reports of a suspicious package left near the entrance to the base. As a precaution, traffic was diverted and drivers were urged to avoid the area while bomb technicians investigated.

Authorities suited up and moved in, bringing traffic to a halt and creating delays across the busy corridor. By 11 a.m., the all-clear was given.

According to officials, the item was not a threat but rather a piece of luggage belonging to a soldier stationed at Fort Gordon. The bag had been delivered by an airport transport service and, for reasons still unclear, was left near the main Fort Gordon sign instead of being taken directly to the soldier.

The service member was contacted and retrieved their belongings. All lanes reopened and traffic was returned to normal.
