A routine traffic stop exploded into chaos Wednesday evening when a stolen vehicle bolted from Richmond County deputies, sparking a high-speed pursuit that ended with a crash on the grounds of the Augusta Country Club, authorities said.

Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle on Johns Road near Walton Way when the driver, a 16-year-old juvenile, fled. The pursuit continued to the end of Johns Road, where the vehicle crashed and came to rest on the country club property.

Authorities say the teen then ran from the scene, prompting a short foot chase across parts of the golf course. Deputies took him into custody a short time later, and an ambulance responded to examine him.

Deputies block the roadway near a downed power line connected to the pursuit of a stolen vehicle Wednesday evening. The crash left the line sagging across the street as authorities secured the area. Photo contributed.

The investigation is ongoing. More information will be released when available, authorities said.
