Text message, email warns AU community of ‘incident’ at Piedmont Hospital

Approximately 170 University Healthcare and Piedmont Augusta retirees have filed a lawsuit demanding the hospital honor its promise to provide a Medicare supplemental plan when they reach age 65.

Piedmont Augusta said power was restored around 11 a.m. on Monday.

A text alert warning of an “incident” at Piedmont Hospital went out to Augusta University students and faculty just after 1 p.m. Wednesday.

It said any threat from the incident was over. “There are no active threats to the AU community at this time,” it said.

Piedmont said around 3 p.m. there was no incident at all.

“There was an alert mistakenly distributed to employees and corrected within two minutes,” said Rebecca Sylvester, brand growth business partner for Piedmont Augusta. “There was no incident involving a gun of any kind. It was a misunderstanding.”

The AU alert did not mention a gun. AU Police sent the alert after Piedmont notified the university of an incident at its downtown hospital, said Kevin Faigle, AU media relations specialist.

Sylvester said it was unclear who notified AU of an incident, but that “nothing official” had been sent.
