Just across the 13th Street bridge at 133 Georgia Ave. sits a British pub that is a North Augusta mainstay. First opened in 1978, The Highlander has a long and storied tradition of hosting rock concerts featuring traveling groups from across the Southeast as well as bands local to the CSRA.

Live music events happen each weekend, and The Highlander announces the shows ahead of time on its Facebook page. Parking is plentiful, but be sure to arrive early enough to grab a good spot. From the parking lot, take the stairs down to the underground hideaway. Once you cross the threshold, you will step back into another time and place.

The pub has an authentic English feel with brick floors, white walls and a low-slung ceiling with exposed beams. Large tables fill the space between the bar and the stage, and they are big enough for you to gather with friends over drinks. A fireplace next to the bar lends a cozy touch to an already comfortable room. The stage is set across from the bar which makes every seat in the house a good one. Dartboards on the wall behind the stage add to the atmosphere.

The bar offers comfortable seating and stocks several bottled beer choices as well as a few taps if you prefer a draught. On the night I visited, the bartender stayed busy serving cold beers to the crowd that gathered for a night of rock ‘n’ roll.

Bona Lisa, a band from Columbia, S.C., brought its original heavy metal and hard rock songs to the stage on Friday, May 14. Lead singer Donna Milikin engaged the audience with her powerful vocals and striking stage presence while her guitarist husband Andrew and a tight rhythm section featuring guest bassist Dale Raszewski wowed the crowd with their musical prowess.
