Faith: The Peace of God

Rev. Bill Harrell

Date: December 31, 2023

Well, here we are at the beginning of a New Year! It hardly seems possible that another year has gone by but it’s true. A year is a long time but then again it is not. They seem to get lost in time as the years of life pass by. One looks back in their memory and often finds that those years in the middle of life were like a blur. Where did they go. What all took place in those fleeting periods of time? If a person sits down and contemplates the passing of those years, the memories come from between the cracks and flood our minds again. Did that actually happen thirty-four years ago? It seems like only yesterday. My….how time flies!

When thinking of a coming year, it seems like such a long period of time but when looking back on a number of years it seems that they went by so quickly. My Grandmother told me that the older one gets, the faster time goes. It seems that way but in reality, it goes no faster than ever before. It’s how we live our time that makes the big difference. We all have he same amount of time in a given year. There are 31,536,000 seconds in one year. We all have those in which to live our lives. Some people seem to get more done in those seconds than other people do but no one has more time than anyone else. It’s how we live our lives that counts.

In this coming year there will certainly be times when we are frustrated and frightened by what we see developing in our society and the world at large. It can cause people to live irritated and frustrated lives which are not rewarding to them or anyone else around them. All this occurs when we think that WE are the ones who must do something about the situation. Most of what is going to happen in this coming year of 2024 is beyond our personal ability to change it. The only way to find peace, which everyone wants, is to trust God to deal with it in the way He knows it must be dealt with. Where we cannot go as pertaining to a solution, He can go! When we don’t know what to do; He does. When we don’t have the power to do what must be done; He does. And, in the process, He gives us what Paul refers to in Philippians 4:6-7. He says this: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. And the PEACE OF GOD which passes all understanding will keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

God knows in advance what is going to happen to America, to the World and to us personally before it ever becomes a historical event. If we are truly trusting Him, we will be able to have that Peace that Paul is talking about even while living in the mess we humans have created. And, God has already told us much about what will happen as He takes over and consummates His plan for planet earth and for each of us. The thing that makes the difference is this: Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? That is essential for you to have the PEACE THAT PASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING the Bible speaks about. It IS possible for you and yours. And, while the societies of the earth are floundering around trying to circumvent God and yet be successful, those of us who trust in Jesus Christ can find the way to have peace in the midst the turmoil. And, when we are affected by what happens in the world, we can see beyond it to when God will consummate the age according to His Plan. Our peace is grounded in His Son, Jesus and by our faith in Him to take care of His own.

Want peace? There is only one true place to find it and He tells us bout it in His Word, The Bible. Read it and experience the “Peace of God that passes all understanding” during the coming 31,536,000 seconds of 2024.
