Richmond County Board of Education members submitted a request to the local legislative delegation for a salary increase in hopes that the General Assembly would consider their request, and it seems like they just might get that pay raise.
The Board of Education members have not received a salary upgrade in 19 years, and even though the job is part time, members feel that they should get a little more compensation for their work.
According to District 123 Representative Mark Newton of Augusta, the Legislature has received the request along with letters of recommendation.
“The local delegation supports this,” Newton says. “There have been letters of recommendation from three senators and five representatives.”
The requested raises are almost double the current salaries. The board president receives $14,000 annually, the vice president receives $13,000 and members $12,000.
So, after nearly two decades, the Board of Education might finally get that cost-of-living increase.
