With candidate qualifying around the corner, a third candidate to replace retiring Chief Superior Court Judge Daniel J. Craig has emerged.
Augusta trial lawyer Matt Matson filed a declaration of intent to seek campaign contributions Friday.

Matson holds a J.D. from Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law and a forestry degree from the University of Georgia.
Currently a lawyer in private practice, Matson previously clerked in the Augusta Superior Court and prosecuted cases for the Richmond County Solicitor’s Office.

He joins attorney Charles H.S. Lyons III, who ran for a superior court judgeship in 2022, and Chief Juvenile Court Judge Willie M. Saunders in seeking the nonpartisan judgeship May 21.

None of the three have reported any fundraising yet.
Among four other Augusta judgeships up for election May 21, none were contested as of Monday. Candidate qualifying is March 4-8.
The judgeships include presiding judge of Richmond County Civil and Magistrate Court, held by LeJoi Williamson and the state court judgeships held by Kellie McIntyre and Robert “Bo” Hunter III.
In the contest to replace retiring Probate Court Judge Harry James, only one hopeful has announced a campaign for the post.
The candidate is Stacy Y. Johnson, an attorney with the Frails and Wilson law firm.
Johnson attended the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University.
