Tiger makes cut at Masters for record-tying 23rd straight time

Masters champion Tiger Woods of the United States plays a stroke from the No. 2 tee during the first round of the 2023 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, Thursday, April 6, 2023.

Date: April 08, 2023

Tiger Woods made his 23rd consecutive cut at the Masters in a row Saturday morning (April 8), tying friend Freddie Couples and Masters legend Gary Player.

Friday’s second round got called at about 4:45 p.m. due to the windy conditions that caused three trees to fall on hole No. 17, thus forcing Woods and the other competitiors on the course to stop playing.

No one really knew what this would mean for the man who’s won the green jacket five times. With Wood’s right leg still an issue, it would only, in theory, get worse in the cold rain that descended on Augusta National on Saturday morning.

The second round started back up Saturday at 8 a.m. Woods, at the time? was a single shot inside the cut line.

Woods was having to fight the course with the rainy, cool weather, and seemed like he couldn’t quite get the hang of it, although no one else seemed like they could either.

He made a birdie putt on No. 15 to move to 1 over, safely in the final-36 field at that putt. He saved par with a seven-foot putt on No. 16.

But he bogeyed 17 to fall back to 2 over par.

Going into the 18th hole, Woods needed to make par to stay at 2 over and make the cut.

After a rough tee shot, he was having to hit from the pine straw. He was short with that shot and could not save his par with a 30-foot putt that came up short. Woods’ bogey put the potential to his attempt to tie for the most cuts made on thin ice.

The cut would need to go up to 3 over for him to make it.

Justin Thomas, who is one of Woods’ good friends, and Sungjae Im were both at 2 over, and one would need to get to 3 over to for Woods to make the cut.

Thomas had to continue to play in heavy rain, and he would shoot 42 on the back nine. He just missed a par putt on 18 and finished at 4 over, missing the cut himself.

And that, of course, secured Tigers’ 23rd consecutive cut at the Masters.

With Woods having to tee off for the third round of the tournament today at 1:06 p.m., we’ll see if his leg will leg will hold up, and if he can go out there and give patrons the memories he’s given them time and time again.

Couples also made the cut, becoming the oldest player ever to advance to the final 36 holes. He was 1 over par through two rounds. Couples is 63 years old.
