It was a different type of project for Time For Three, as the members collaborated to create the musical score for an independent film called “Land.”
“That was a pretty big thing for us,” said Ranaan Meyer, vocalist and double bass player for the trio, who will be in concert May 22 as part of the Joye in Aiken event.
“Land” is the directorial debut for Robin Wright, who also stars in the film about a woman who is faced with a traumatic event in her life and retreats into the mountains as a way of dealing with her emotions, Meyer said. Released in February 2020, it came out on DVD May 11.

“Robin was the heart and soul of this project,” he said.
During the latter part of 2020, members of the group teamed up with cellist and composer Ben Sollee. They worked separately at times in their own studios to come up with a score that was more than beautiful music. The songs had to reflect the deep emotions Wright’s character was processing, as well as the grandeur and harsh conditions of the land she found herself in, he said.
Whether or not music from the film is part of Time For Three’s Aiken appearance hasn’t been decided yet.

“We’re very flexible when it comes to our sets,” Meyer said.
The concert will be the group’s ninth live appearance since the pandemic. The members have put together a “Land” medley, but they don’t play it at every venue.
Time For Three is a unique trio. The group’s tagline is a “classically trained garage band.” In addition to Meyer, members include Charles Yang and Nick Kendall, who both play violin. The group’s music spans multiple genres and eras.
The musicians have played “Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center and The Royal Albert Hall. They have collaborated with artists as diverse as Ben Folds, Branford Marsalis and Joshua Bell, and have premiered original works by composers Chris Brubeck and Pulitzer Prize-winners Jennifer Higdon and William Bolcom,” according to the group’s official biography.

Time For Three is performing as part of the annual Joye In Aiken series, which brings in world-class musicians to multiple venues in the city. This year’s Joye in Aiken was scheduled to have begun in March, according to a news release, but earlier events were cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns.
Meyer said the group has performed in Aiken several times, and members are looking forward to returning. The city is one of his favorite places to perform. The feeling is mutual because the group is one of the top two favorite performers with Joye in Aiken, the news release said.
Not only is the city itself beautiful, but he likes the people.

“The people take so much pride in their community,” he said.
The Time For Three concert is scheduled for 7 p.m., May 22, on the lawn of the Green Boundary Club. Tickets are $50 and are available through the University of South Carolina Aiken’s Etherredge Center’s box office by calling (803) 641-3305. A rain date is set for May 23.
