On Friday, an A.R. Johnson student signed to play golf at the collegiate level, a notable accomplishment considering that his high school is not an athletic intention school.
Cameron Tiwkohng has signed to play at Livingstone College, where he has received a full ride scholarship totaling a minimum of $104,000.
Tiwkohng, who has been playing the game since sixth grade, said his dad should be credited for sparking his passion.
“When I was younger, he would take me out to the driving range and I just fell in love with it,” he said.

Balancing sports and academics
Further, he said that he was always encouraged to balance sports with his education, something that is reflected in his 4.039 GPA.
“My dad always instilled in me to keep in good grades…good grades and being decent at the sport got me into the position I’m in today,” he said.

Coach Darrin Shine said that he feels he’s learned much about golf from Tiwkohng. “I learned so much from him, so just to see where he’s, you know, accomplished a full athletic scholarship, you know, it means the world to not just him, but just as a school and community,” he said.
“[He] has put in a lot of time into the game of golf…I’ve seen the work that he’s put in,” Shine added.
