Tragedy strikes on C Street: 1 Dead, another injured in Augusta shooting

One person was killed and another injured Sunday night after a double shooting on C Street in Augusta.

Richmond County authorities responded to the distress call at 8:05 p.m. Sunday on the 2100 Block of C Street. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a grim scene: one victim lay motionless, succumbing to at least one gunshot wound, while the other, wounded in the leg, was promptly rushed to the hospital for urgent medical care, according to Sgt. Caleb Lee of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Jaleen Xavier Sumpter, 22, of Reserve Lane, Augusta, was shot at least one time and pronounced dead on the scene at 8:45 p.m. Sunday, according to Coroner Mark Bowen. An autopsy has been scheduled.

As the investigation unfolds, law enforcement officials remain on the scene, diligently piecing together the events. At this juncture, details surrounding the victims’ names, a motive or suspects remain undisclosed.

Video of the unfolding scene was posted live on Facebook after the shootings by “Priscilla Da PlusPlug,” with images of officers and paramedics arriving and neighbors reacting to the gun violence.
