Train derailed on 11th Street Tuesday night

Date: February 01, 2023

At around 11 pm Tuesday, Jan. 31, a CSX train derailed nine rail cars at 11th Street, the transit company said in a recent statement.

The incident prompted the response of rail crews and the Richmond County Sherriff’s Office, and CSX workers have been tending to the area, with the intersection of 11th and Walker Streets, at the Millhouse Station apartment complex, blocked off as recently as Wednesday morning.

All cars were upright, CSX said, with no leaks or injuries to the crew. The company and touted the “prompt response by local emergency responders.” The cause is under investigation.

In June of last year, a train derailed in the CSX railyard on Columbia Nitrogen Road, with several cars overturning as a result, but no injuries reported or hazardous materials released.
