Laney-Walker Boulevard is expected to be blocked for some time after CSX rail cars came off the tracks near Gordon Highway around 7 a.m. Thursday.

A CSX spokesperson said nine rail cars containing malt beverage derailed at the nearby CSX Augusta Yard.

All the cars remained upright, no leaks or spills of freight occurred, no injuries occurred and there were no hazardous materials involved, the statement said.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation, according to the rail company and Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office asked motorists to avoid Laney-Walker between New Savannah Road and Fifth Street as well as Nowell Road for the next few days.
