Trending with Mike: A peek inside a project

I love to walk through a client’s home and discuss their ideas, and sometimes my clients will tell me of issues they are having with their current decor.

Maybe something doesn’t feel right or maybe a room doesn’t feel finished and they are at a loss as to what it needs. Maybe the room just needs a refresh. I am not one to rush in and suggest we change everything.

It doesn’t matter if it is one room or many, I like to walk through the entire home to get a feel for how my client lives and entertains. I pay attention to what makes their home a home, both in comfort and aesthetic.

Many times I can re-use what a client already has, and I may move an object from one room to another. Sometimes they have their furniture or artwork in the wrong space and a simple shift of existing furniture can make all the difference.

Don’t get me wrong, I do love to find furnishings for a client, and I love adding to their curated story; but, It must be a piece that flows well, yet makes a statement. Take a look at this recent job I worked on for a client.

My client had a lovely bedroom, yet it needed a little pop on the focal piece, which in this case is the bed. My client loves color, so I didn’t have to talk her into something bold!

A colorful comforter allowed for a grouping of solid colorful pillows. However, we needed a statement piece and something to pull it all together. The tiger print fabric I found was perfect and to play off of the square pillows I suggested a large roll.

The fabric fit nicely on this shape and once placed front and center, it creates a nice theme.

I also found some fun lamps for the nightstands, and then I suggested arched mirrors behind each lamp to give depth and dimension and give a sense of height, as the bed and nightstands were rectangular the arched shape adds a nice silhouette.

The sitting room adjacent to the bed area needed a little more personality, so I added two drapery panels. As we had enough pop in the room, I installed neutral linen panels with a turquoise drapery tape along the leading edge and It framed the fireplace nicely by using just the two panels.

These panels, placed both left and right visually make the wall look wider as well. A TV is to come.

The Dining Room was formal, yet seemed a little dated and cold as well. Changing the fabric on the chair seats to a cut velvet in turquoise was a nice update. I added a pair of drapery panels, once again in a neutral linen and added a drapery tape in shades of gray and turquoise.

These two simple additions updated the look with a sense of simple elegance.
