Many people are afraid of color, especially in their bedroom decor. They want to come home after a long workday and feel relaxed. Don’t be afraid of color. Some colors actually make you relaxed as they soothe your eyes and brain.

A little pop of color never hurt anyone either!

I see a lot of people playing it safe when it comes to color. I see many homes that are decorated in two colors. It is simple, monochromatic and safe.

There are many popular monochromatic palette combinations: blue and brown, blue and green, blue and yellow, orange and hot pink, beige and gray, red and green and on and on.

Adding a third color can really make a room pop! It makes a room look better put together and makes your friends think you must have hired a professional.

But beware. It isn’t as easy as it looks. You need something like a fabric or a rug or a piece of art that marries your colors. Something that draws the eyes and pulls it all together.

Take, for instance, this bedroom project I did for a client.

Before, the client played it safe, with blues and browns only. It was gender neutral and relaxing, yet it seemed uninspired and bland.

This homeowner was ready for some color, and I was certainly ready, but we had to adhere to a budget.

In simply changing out the rug and bedding, I was able to bring life to this space. We kept the furniture, art and window treatments.

I found an inexpensive rug that had chocolate and blue hues with a little blend of coral added in for contrast. This allowed me to play up on the coral theme in the bedding.

The old dark bedroom was now refreshing and still calm and relaxing!

We could have considered changing out the art that brought in another color or possibly added a more dramatic, colorful print on the window treatment, but just adding in that splash of coral did the trick nicely.

If you always look for something that creates the theme in your room, then you won’t go wrong.

Rugs can be expensive, so sometimes using a more inexpensive neutral rug and grounding your furniture can do the trick; or maybe you have a bolt of fabric you have been waiting to use.
