I find many people plop down a floral arrangement of some sort onto their dining room table and call it a day, but I enjoy creating a “tablescape” for my clients.

Sometimes I look through my clients existing decor and try to regroup pieces onto the dining table. I don’t always consider a floral. I consider several things.

What is the clients theme in the room? What is the color scheme? Are they more traditional or contemporary? Will they let me think outside the box and create something a little different?

The fun thing is, this detail can be transitional. It is not a permanent detail. It can change or grow over time, should the client get bored with it; and, if using existing items, it doesn’t cost a thing!

As I do like to add a floral green in every room, the dining table is a great place to add something green, making it center stage in the middle of the room. It is fresh and neutral and allows you to add layers of more detailed decor.

The green can be fresh that you add from your garden, or the grocery store or florist when you are entertaining. Or it could a preserved typed of green that will last for years. And maybe it could be a series of more than one!

Don’t overdo your table decor if you wish to remove the detail when you are dining with your guests. Sometimes a tall arrangement can block you from seeing your guests across the table.

Candlelight is always a nice touch, be it taper candlesticks or a larger candle.

If you have a round table, one central item is standard. If you have a rectangular table, you can spread your decor down the center of the table. All of these items can sit directly on the table or you can use a table runner…or series of runners to “ground” your decor.

If you like placemats, you don’t want your table decor to be too busy.

Sometimes a low hanging chandelier can create a problem. You might find the decor you want to use is too high, the chandelier hanging over the table can become a distraction.

If you don’t think too hard, you can have fun creating new tablescapes. Considering seasonal themes allows you to change up your table decor more frequently.
