Selecting the right lamp is more important than you think. In the daytime, we usually have enough natural light shining in from a window. However, once the sun sets, we have to consider what is best to illuminate our spaces.
Many homes have can, or recessed lights, in the ceiling. This can give the room overall lighting, but doesn’t create an intimate feeling, nor does it always give us the specific light we need to read a book, play a board game or other certain needs.
And, of course, the lighting should be attractive, be of proper scale and co-ordinate with its surroundings. I sometimes see small lamps that are too small for the space. A lamp under 20 inches can have nice character, but usually cannot put off much light as the wattage usually cannot exceed 40 watt bulb. It can serve as a nice night light or create a nice glow in a dark area. Also, a thinner lamp is best on a buffet as they don’t have enough impact for a larger area.

A table lamp, or a bedside lamp is usually best at a height from between 27 to 33 inches. A 60 watt bulbs give a sufficient amount of light for most tasks.
Lamps can add a nice decorative detail to a room. They come in metal finishes, glass, ceramic and other materials. Sometimes the base of the lamp even lights up! If you have a high traffic area, especially with young children, you might consider a lamp that will not easily break should it fall from a table.

Some lamps have a switch that allows you to use a three way bulb. If you need the lamp for a variety of tasks, this could be a great choice!

The shade of the lamp can also be important in the amount of light it can emit. Some shades are white and can be a bit too stark for a room’s decor. Many times a linen color shade can let a sufficient amount of light shine through and works well with a rooms color scheme. While light cannot filter through, it can help direct the light to a certain area.

A floor lamp can be a great consideration. It can be easily moved around a room. Some have an arc or an arm that allows you to bring the light over the area you are using.

I have even used a floor lamp on a table to create a unique look.
With all of the options there are, make sure to consider all of your needs to find the perfect lamp.
