When decorating a space, the consideration of your artwork is one of the most important aspects.
Art can create the theme of the room. As it rests on the wall, it has a very powerful impact. Size is just as important as color, pattern and theme.
Take, for example, this recent commercial art installation. This restaurant was a vast space.

Not only wide, but as the ceiling was deconstructed, the space was extremely voluminous. I found it important to find several large pieces of complimentary art.
It can sometimes be hard to find multiple companion pieces, especially in such a large size as I needed. The previous design had a variety of smaller black and white art on the wall. This art just floated on the wall and offered no impact.
As this restaurant focuses on breakfast, I wanted bright, colorful pieces. So, I scoured my art vendors and found three large landscapes that offered bright, cheerful colors. While trying not to be too feminine or too masculine, I found the landscapes to be gender friendly.

The wall now pops. It creates a sense of depth as it draws your focus into and through the space onto the textured brick wall.
The restaurant job was easy as I had no other patterns to consider. Most residential projects have a variety of patterns to consider as you group decor together.
In this home office, I had these custom fabric Roman Shades made and installed. They are a bright Asian pattern that accentuate the pagoda style shelving unit between the two shades.

Finding the right piece of art was a little more difficult for this job, as I designed short bookcases flanked by taller bookcases to the left and right
I needed a focal point in the center, over the shorter units and I couldn’t select a fluid pattern as it would fight with the fabric shade pattern. I decided an abstract was the perfect choice.

In this case, color had to be the deciding factor. I found the perfect piece that had bright strokes of color that pulled the colors perfectly from the fabric. The size of the art fits the space nicely. The colors in the art and fabric allowed me the opportunity to add upholstery and decor in complimentary colors for a nice, fresh look.
