Trending with Mike: Making a statement with color

Many people tend to neutralize a home with a bland paint color on all of the walls. We definitely see this in new construction and homes that are going on the market. Neutral gives a clean look and is gender friendly. It is easy on the eyes and doesn’t intimidate or overwhelm.

Neutral, especially in gray tones, is still a current, popular trend.

It is fun to consider bringing a pop of color to the walls of a room. What is important to keep in mind is how will that color flow from adjoining rooms and whether there is certain architecture in a room that a color can help to accent?

Take a look at the following before and after photos.

Coming in from the foyer the fireplace wall was straight ahead. As it was, it was a little bland and very busy. The proportion of the art was too small, and the windows left the room cold. The fireplace should be the focal point, and this fireplace fizzled. The room was uninviting.

The first thing I suggested was a bold paint color.

Considering the ceiling was vaulted I knew that a color would accentuate this architectural detail. After finding the perfect art for my client, as well as a proper size, we pulled a green from the art as the wall color.

My client loved the color so much, she decided to paint the entire room in the green.

I added an arched iron piece above the art to not only add some overall height to the art, but I found one that also arched in the middle, again playing off of the angled ceiling.

My client desired a window treatment yet didn’t want to obstruct her view or sun light.

A “topper” would have cut the room’s height visually. So I suggested panels that would give good height. Instead of hanging the fabric on a straight rod, I designed a treatment with wall brackets that allowed me to place them along the angle of the ceiling.

With just the right color treatment, the room is cozy and inviting. Photo courtesy of Mike Siewert.

I redecorated the mantle and kept it simple.

Now when my clients guests enter the home, their eye is pulled into the space, inviting them into the room.

Green is a color from nature, so although it is a bold color, it is a sophisticated look. It is not too garish that would get boring in a short time.
