Trending with Mike: Move it out of the way!

I always love to discuss a room having multi-functions as I furnish it with a client. As I work with clients building a home, it is nice for a room to have multi-functions so that as a room has a variety of uses, fewer rooms need to be built!

One major consideration for such rooms is seating.

While I do like to design a sectional into a living space, as it is very inviting and allows for great lounging, it can sometimes create an issue when you are trying to use the room for other functions. With that said, I like to use a sofa and occasional chairs that can be easily moved to accommodate a variety of functions.

It can be a big plus if these chairs can swivel. They can easily be a part of several functions in a room!

One reason I like to specify smaller scale furniture, especially for a living room is to make it easy to add a Christmas tree for the holidays.

Sometimes, when working with a client in the spring, they might look at me like I’m crazy if I mention this! But it is important to think about these things in the beginning stages of designing a room. No matter for a Christmas tree or a bridge club, bunco get together or a group of guys getting together to watch a game, it is important to think about the endless possibilities.

As we get older it is more difficult to move bulkier items around a room.

Consider your hobbies, the holidays or how it is you like to entertain when you begin to furnish a room. So many times when I meet with a client they express their dismay in how a room doesn’t work well for their lifestyle. And usually, it is because they have dated, large furniture that makes it hard to reconfigure a room when needed. And let’s face it, it is nice to have a change because our furniture can become stale.

It is Christmas time, so I know I am dwelling on the Christmas tree. A tree should be the focal point in the room. But don’t forget about the other focal points in the room, such as the fireplace, a window or architectural detail.

Your tree should supplement the already given drama in the room. Layering is always important and even more so when you are adding seasonal decor. If you add a tree across the room from the fireplace, you are subliminally creating a confusion to your guests as they enter the room.

Layer the focal points and make a large statement.
