Some may call it hoarding, but I call it amassing hidden treasure.
Often, I meet with many clients who have a closet full of random decor pieces they have purchased over the years.
They go shopping with a friend at a local retail store and have a “party” in the home decor section going WILD filling a cart with pretty objects, and items that are on clearance that they feel they cannot pass up! These items, many times, go unused and stuck in a closet or placed throughout the home with no reasoning.
I absolutely love to pull these items out onto the floor and sift through the goods. I first begin grouping items together, either by style, color or shape. I consider which rooms may benefit from these pieces.
Grouping items together makes a larger statement and makes the “story” you were trying to exhibit more interesting.
I call random items placed sporadically on a wall “postage stamps.” This carefree uninteresting design just floats on the wall with no personality.
We all go to parties and take a host/hostess gift. I see so many times a gift being a home decor item. Believe it or not, people give me, a designer, items to decorate my home.
Decorating is personal, and while the thought is very kind, so many of these gifts are also stored away in closets as the recipient did not know what to do with it, or they simply didn’t like it.
If you want to give a decor gift, maybe give a more disposable item, like a candle or a paper product such as napkins, plates, etc. If you are a spouse and want to give your partner a decor gift, get to know the stores your spouse shops and have the clerks take notes.
And always take good notes on “holes” in your decor so that as you travel you may find that perfect piece that has a great travel story attached to it!
