One dilemma I find that most of my clients have when refurnishing a living or family room is whether to use a sofa with chairs, a pair of sofas or a sectional.
It can usually be very simple for me to give good advice. A lot of the planning has to do with the traffic flow of the room.
Smaller pieces such as a sofa and chairs can be placed around the room much easier than a larger sectional. If there are multiple doors where people need to enter and leave the room, these upholstered pieces need to be placed strategically.
As I have discussed before, a swivel chair can be a great addition to any room, especially in a room that is difficult to furnish. The chair can swivel and be directed toward a conversation, a TV or anywhere else in the room.

When using multiple pieces of upholstery furniture in a room with hardwood floors, you will want a rug large enough to ground and unite these pieces. Minimally, the front legs should be resting on the rug.
How many people do you need to sit on a regular basis? Sometimes a sectional, even though it is large can be more difficult to sit a lot of people, especially in the square corners where pillow tend to land.
Two matching sofas give a more formal look. For those who like symmetry, and a clean look, this might be your best option.

A sectional works really well in a room where you want to lounge.
Many sectionals today are comprised of components that you can order various pieces to get the perfect size and shape. Maybe a U-shape works better in your space than an L-shape. And it allows you to reconfigure the sectional, should you want some flexibility.

Draft your room out. Use some graph paper if you don’t know how to use a draftsman’s scale. Draw lines where your traffic patterns are. Once on paper, it will make your job a lot easier to figure out what works best for you.
