Trending with Mike: The Fireplace should be hot

The fireplace should be the focal point in any room, especially if it is the built-in type on a wall.

Many people exaggerate the fireplace wall and will add stone or brick that extends all the way up the wall to the ceiling. A hearth is usually always added, first out of necessity for a wood burning fireplace to keep the front area fireproof and later with gas fireplaces as a decorative element.

Considering the fireplace is usually ducted (or appears to be ducted), it can protrude out from the wall, making an even bigger statement.

Furniture in a room should be directed toward the fireplace to demand the attention to the focal feature.

If a TV is in the room, it is sometimes placed above the fireplace opening or in a cabinet or on the wall directly next to the fireplace. This keeps the focus on that particular area.

Decorating the fireplace is important.

It needs to be well appointed and grounded. If a wood burning fireplace, there needs to be the proper tool set that usually perches on a stand. A mantel assists as a landing space to decorate upon. It can also help keep the heat of a fire away from the TV above.

If you are not using a TV above the fireplace, consider a large piece of art or mirror. A green of some sort is always fresh in any space, and a taller green can help accentuate the height of the fireplace and balance the space well.

I love to use a decorative fireplace screen on every project. No one wants to look into an empty fireplace opening. Toddlers and pets seem drawn to this area and a screen will help deflect their attention.

A mantle is a great place for seasonal decor. It can also help the theme of your room.

Are you more farmhouse style? Add a reclaimed block of wood. Are you more formal? Have a carpenter build a mantle fit for a King! Garland and ornaments are always festive looking over a burning fireplace!

Take a look at the project below. The focal point was dead, dark and lifeless. In just adding a few elements such as a screen, a conical green and some glazed vases that help bring in some color and reflect light this space now has life and draws your attention where it should.
