Trending with Mike: Towels displays can make a difference

Towels of every color! It can be confusing for a person to make a decision on what towels to purchase.

I usually have a rulep of thumb. If the towels are for show only and not going to be used, maybe consider a color that coordinates with your decor. Consider layering a hand towel and maybe a wash cloth over a bath towel. And maybe each of these towels feature a different color, to make a nice pop in pulling the room together.

If the towels are going to be used, I personally like a clean white towel. Just like a hotel.

For me, a white towel is like a nice, clean white bed sheet (that will be another column). White that can easily be bleached, unlike a colored towel. There is a reason hotels use white towels. And if your guests who wear heavy makeup are using your towels, you are definitely going to need the bleach!

However, white towels don’t have to be boring. Again, adding a hand towel, and possibly a wash cloth over that, adds a nice layered look. Make sure to fold both left and right sides of the towels behind, so you get a full and fluffy look.

My rule of thumb is that if the towels are meant to be used, the white is the best color. Photo by Mike Siewert.

If towels are for decor only, consider adding a design element over the towels. The popular beads that we are seeing layered on a coffee table can be draped over the towels. Maybe you have a decorative hand towel or wash cloth that has embroidery, a monogram or a scalloped edge along the bottom to layer on top.

Some bathrooms have a large jacuzzi tub or a long vanity top. I like to roll a towel, or maybe three in a pyramid shape, and place on these surfaces. Rolled towels look great in a large basket, too. It creates a spa look. We all like to feel relaxed in our bathrooms as we prepare for our day.

And don’t forget about paper options. There are so many great colors and patterns in paper hand towels and the vessels to hold these sorts of towels can be decorative as well.

If you don’t want to display a towel in your guest bathrooms, these paper products are a nice option. And considering some patterns are seasonal, you can create a nice theme. These sorts of paper products make for a great gift, too! If I am giving a friend a gift for their home, I tend to like to give a more disposable item, such as a candle or paper napkins or hand towels.
