It’s cold!

We are living in our homes more than usual, especially when we aren’t used to extreme winter weather.

More and more of us want our homes to look well put together so that we have something to be proud of not only for ourselves, but also for our visiting family and friends. It must also be a place we can feel comfortable in, especially when its cold outside to the degree we want to hibernate, stay in and stay warm.

Let’s start with some simple things that can be added to ramp up the coziness.

A throw or blanket laying over the bed or arm of a sofa is always nice to have when you want to cuddle in for a movie or good book. Think about texture and adding a pop of color that coordinates with your rooms decor.

In a living room, I like to drape a faux fur throw over the arm of the sofa. It adds texture and a nice design element and it is always ready for me or a guest to use if we get a chill.

In my bedroom I have a colorful blanket draped on a tall armchair, adding a nice pop of color that can easily be moved to the bed if needed. I have a client that likes the pattern and texture of quilts. So, I added a display ladder that displays these quilts, adding a unique design element that makes them within hands reach to use if needed.

As I work with many clients who desire window treatments, I find they almost always want something light and simple at the windows. We have moved away from heavy window treatments, but still want to control the level of lighting naturally.

There are ways to add a window treatment that doesn’t feel overpowering, yet can offer options when trying to filter the sun or help to insulate the windows when closed on those really cold days.

Always consider your options and how you can add a functional treatment at your window and doors. There are certain linings and inner linings that can assist in light and weather blocking. And, if your budget allows, you can add motorization that makes it very easy to control multiple treatments.

Swap your pillows out on your sofa to something more comfortable and functional in the winter.

We tend to cuddle and curl more on our sofas in colder months. That is the perfect time to use pillows that are furry and maybe larger than usual, so that when you curl up on your sofa with a bowl of soup, you feel the warm texture.

Candles can be very decorative and very fragrant, and although they don’t necessarily add heat to a room, the flickering flame gives a sense of warmth.

You can create a cozy vignette on a tray by layering a candle, something fresh and green and maybe a book.
