Mostly when a client comes to me and asks for some design assistance, they are usually hoping I can give them some “wow,” some “pop” in their space.
Most people would think this would be a large element, like a new focal point, maybe a statement made with color or possibly some architectural detail. However, it doesn’t always have to be so difficult or expensive to create a look that makes a statement.
Sometimes, a simple shape change in a space can have a great impact.
When you think of the general elements in a room, you will envision a lot of angles. Rooms are almost always built rectangular or square. Doors and windows are rectangular or square, most furniture and built in cabinetry is angular and drapery rods are mostly horizontal.
The popular shiplap is also horizontal and most people consider rectangular rugs in a room.

Let me share a simple trick that will make your spaces have a little more character. By simply adding something circular, curved or arched in a room you can achieve a look that us designers have been doing for a long time.
I have shared my trick of adding mirrors over nightstands. Considering most beds and nightstands are rectangular in a rectangular room, making the mirrors round or arched will be a much better choice than rectangular mirrors.

In a bathroom, if your lighting allows, add an arched mirror instead of the usual rectangular mirror.

Oval nightstands have become popular. They can really take the edge off of a rectangular bed.

Round cocktail tables work really well in a living room. They can act as a pivot point for the seating in the room.

When you add a rug to a room, usually you want the rug to “ground” the furniture in the room, to unite the furniture grouping. Adding a round rug, especially if you are grouping club chairs together or with a sofa, can give your room some added interest.

A chandelier that is round or oval can really pop when it hangs from a rectangular ceiling. It would really be the perfect shape if your ceiling is coffered. It will be a great accent contrasting all of the trimmed out ceiling detail.

If you are building a home or adding on to your home, consider adding something round, oval or arched. This detail can add a great detail both on the interior and exterior of your home, contrasting with the rectangular windows of the home and the angles of your roof.

When you consider your next project, no matter how big or small, take the edge off and add a little curvature!
