Trending with Signature Mike: Hot and cold

The weather this time of year is so unpredictable. One morning we wear a jacket or coat and by the afternoon we are sweating like it’s summer. We get several warm days in a row and the nights can be mild enough where we can enjoy an evening outdoors entertaining our family and friends. It can be just as important to have the right outdoor furniture in the winter months as it is in the summer. There is little to no humidity so, if planned right, you can make a perfect space to relax and entertain.

I tend to like ease of maintenance furniture such as resin or plastic. I know this can sound like unattractive pieces, but this type has come a long way. Not only can you select from different styles, but there are also many colors to choose from to coordinate with your decor. I love this type of furniture when the pollen begins to fall. It can easily be hosed down. You can add a cushion to some of the pieces if you prefer a softer seat, but many of the pieces are made to sit very comfortably and they won’t mold or mildew.

Of course some people want to bring their indoors out and they want soft cushions to relax on. The frames can be wooden or of a wicker type, maybe natural rattan or a plasticized wicker look.

Side table and coffee tables have come a long way, too. You can create a unique theme with the many options you have to choose from.

Don’t forget to ground your furniture, as you do inside the home. There are many rug options to select from that are made from fibers that can withstand the outdoor elements.

There are some fun outdoor specialty pieces that could be a fun addition. These goods are made with materials that can withstand the outdoor elements.

Of course any furnishings can wear better if used in an outdoor area that has a covered roof. So you might consider adding a simple area that has a cover. If raining it can make your space even more usable on a rainy day.

A little heat can always help. Chairs placed around a fire pit or a camp fire setting can be a really fun space to roast marshmallows or hot dogs.

There are some outdoor heater options to consider. There are portable types that you can move around to accommodate a variety of setups. Some are very utilitarian in their look and some have interesting swirling flames to give a most unique and modern flair. There are types you can install into your ceiling. If you have a space that you can totally enclose, a mini split air conditioner/heater can be a very versatile unit to add.

Draperies cannot only soften a space and make an open patio feel more separated and feel like a room indoors, but it can help shield some cold wind and help contain any heat in a space.

I love nothing better than putting on a sweater, some corduroys and drinking a warm drink on a cool, brisk evening.
