Have you seen some of those expensive pillows around town? The ones that cost $200 or $300 for ONE pillow?
I know it sounds insane….but it is a thing! Considering what a statement a pillow can make in almost every room, people will pay top price for a pillow. But let me share some ideas with you to get the look without the cost.
First and foremost, consider using the theme fabric on the face of the pillow only. Find a co-ordinating fabric for the back and there can be huge savings! Maybe you have a fabric scrap you can use or maybe you go to a fabric store and find a remnant they are selling for less.
Sometime you might want to splurge and pay for a yard of fabric that you simply cannot live without. But once you have your theme fabric selected, thumb through a fabric sample book and find a color that works well…more than likely a neutral that pulls from the background of the theme fabric.

Here is the front and back of a pillow that I have made.

You can do what is called a simple knife edge where one fabric seams cleanly with another, or you can add a piping or trim along the edge of the pillow. The piping can be made from the front or back fabric.
If you can sew the pillow yourself, of course this will save you money instead of paying someone to make it for you.
There are several options for the fill of the pillow. A feather insert costs more than a polyester insert, but you can’t easily chop a poly filled pillow for that designer look. Maybe you have a pillow already that you can easily recover to save the added cost of a fill.
The back doesn’t always have to be “quiet” or simple. Take a look at this shiny croc in hot pink that worked really well with the face fabric! Both pieces were a remnant so very little was spent on this pillow!

As we have talked about before, your pillow can create a theme in your room. Not only in pattern or style, but it sets the tone for your color palette in the room.
