Trending with Signature Mike: The perfect seat

In working on projects with my clients it has become more important than ever to find the perfect fit where seating is concerned. Sofas and chairs must not only fit the scale of the room, but the seat height and seat depth must fit our personal needs.

When I meet with someone who wants to replace their seating I take note of their current seating dimensions and I ask what they like or don’t like about their situation.

Every sofa and chair is different.

So many sofas you see online with discount home furnishing companies are made in China. This means the seat height is usually much less than desirable. I see many people who pay thousands, even thought they think they have saved money, only to be very disappointed with no way to make a return.

I always think it best to custom order your main seating if possible. This way you get the perfect fit.

The cushions are also a very important detail to consider.

Again, the cheaper scenario is usually just cheap foam cores, making for a somewhat hard and uncomfortable cushion; it is definitely not something you would want to relax or take a nap on. A custom chair or sofa usually offers several options where seat cushions are concerned.

Many people like a down-wrapped foam core that also has springs inside. Maybe you opt for just down wrapped foam core, but either of these options take some maintenance as you will have to “fluff” the cushions from time to time, as the down will compact when sat upon.

A poly wrap foam core is a great option for many as it is still softer than just foam, yet not as soft as down and will take less maintenance. Many times you can also elect how many seat and back cushions you desire. I like a bench seat, which is one super wide cushions. No one wants to sit on a crack between cushions, so I feel the bench seat can accommodate more people comfortably.

When ordering custom, you usually also get to select your arm style. There are a variety of square, rolled or curved arms. Depending on your design style you can continue your look with your chairs or ottomans.

At my store, Signature Interiors, seating is so important to me, that I now have my own line of upholstered furniture.

And, the icing on the cake is that it is all slipcover! The word “slipcover” is not an appealing word to me, however, I have such a wide range of styles and some covers actually Velcro under the frame and give the look of a totally tight upholstered unit!

Come by Signature Interiors, located at 3505 Professional Pkwy. off of Furys Ferry Road in Evan, and find an alternative to buying all new seating by considering slipcovers. All photos courtesy of Mike Siewert.

There are a wide range of performance fabrics to select from and even some leathers. Many of the fabrics can be taken off and laundered! I like the idea that if after a few years one gets tired of their sofa, they can just order a replacement cover and change the look!

This line offers all of the superior options I have mentioned, such as arm styles, a variety of cushion inserts as well as the number of cushions you desire.

No matter what your budget to where you decide to purchase your seating, make sure to get the right fit for your needs!
