I am so excited to share some news with you! I have my very own local lifestyle/design show that will air EVERY Saturday night at 7:30 following the Wheel of Fortune on Channel 12 CBS, WRDW!
The Signature Mike Show!
The premier is Saturday, Sep. 21, and to say I am excited is a huge understatement. I am happy to spread myself to TV and share up close and personal what I do here in my column.
I have some great partners that I will highlight each week, such as Mark Herbert of Herbert Homes, Bordeaux Restaurant, Bordeaux Event center and Emma’s Restaurant. I also have Hardwood Floors & More and The Honeymichael Group discussing trends in flooring, lighting, design and real estate.
Also included are Kelley Appliance, Landrum (plumbing) Supply, A Cut Above (painting contractors), Durty Gurl, Second City Distillery and Bee Healthy weight loss. I am happy to say I have begun a weight loss program with Bee Healthy and in three weeks I have shed eight pounds!
Many of my partners are also involved with a variety of local charitable organizations, so I will be spotlighting many of these great causes. I will be offering design solutions for people who send in photos of their design problems and I will have some fun DIY design projects as well as on sight design troubleshooting.
There is no other local show of it’s kind and I cannot wait to share what our industry’s best is up to! Please follow my YouTube Channel, Signature Mike, to stay up on all things local design!

Now, to share a project I worked on this past week, amongst many hours of filming for my TV show. This client had just moved into her new home and after she purchased her key pieces such as a dining room table and chairs as well as a sectional, she was at a standstill on what to do next.
She didn’t want to make any bad decisions, so she turned to me with her dilemmas.
I had a clean slate, so I had to consider how to prioritize her future design process. There is rarely ever a reason to do everything all at once. And if you want to do it right the first time, baby steps is always best; it is fun and rewarding to build on your project.
Let’s look at the dining room where she needed a little pop. Of course, we talked about a chandelier that makes a bolder statement; but as this is a new home, it is not a priority to begin replacing the already new fixture.
As I knew we were looking for a piece of art in the adjacent living room, I didn’t want to add another piece of art in the dining room. Plus, I felt the dining room needed a sense of depth.

I recommended a large mirror on the wall. This would give us good depth, reflect the chandelier, making its presence larger and not intrude into the floor space. As the area was a rectangular space with the surrounding rooms having rectangular doors and windows, I found an arched mirror that really gave a lot of character to the space!

Now, for the living room. Priorities, priorities! We discussed a rug, art, pillows, window treatment and larger console and TV.

The large sectional needed to be grounded, so a rug was a priority. We selected a neutral rug for my client wanted a piece of art that really popped with a lot of color.
We didn’t want the rug to take away from the impact of the art, so we decided the art should be next to create a theme and a color palette to work from. We found the perfect piece of art that spoke to my client.
A colorful abstract! And it was large! It was the perfect scale for the large room and sectional. It gave the room the personality it needed. Pillows and window treatment will be next on the agenda!

In deciding what was a priority was important. My client will build on her design and we will create layers that work with one another. My client didn’t break the bank and she can feel she made a huge accomplishment as she relaxes in her new home!
