I love helping a client find a piece of art for a room. Whether it is pictures of family or something to hang on a wall, art should tell the story or help create a theme or introduce a color palette.
Most personal art, such as images of family, are 4 x 6, 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 and encased in a frame.
Frames are fun because they either have pull out support on the back or can be placed on an easel and placed around the room. This allows one to add character to bookcases and other landing places. They can also be easily moved around the room from time to time to change things up. I find these types of art pieces too small to hang on the wall, unless grouped together.

You might consider having your family pictures printed on a larger canvas if you would like to hang on the wall. Of course you can frame a canvas, but it can get quite expensive and something you can frame down the road, if it isn’t in your budget.
A basic canvas can create a nice modern piece of art. You can still group these images together to create a family wall and make a larger impact.

I also sell a lot of art prints. Art should help create your theme or color palette and I like a main piece of art to create a focal point. Art can be printed on a variety of mediums. Most commonly again, on canvas. Framed or unframed.
As I really like a large piece of art, again, this can get expensive; however, it all depends on the type of frame I will sometimes choose a lesser expensive and simpler float frame. It has a slight recess around the canvas and then reveals a frame on the outer edge.

You can also have art printed on glass or plexi glass. This is a more modern look and is not framed. It appears to “float” on the wall.

If you have a rustic vibe, art can sometimes be printed on wood. Usually the image is more of a sepia tone and the grain of the wood adds a nice texture.

Maybe you have an industrial feel. Art can be printed on aluminum. Again, it adds a nice texture.
When selecting a frame, you want to select a style that works with your design aesthetic. You also want to consider the color of the frame. Many times a black frame is all that you need and it is very generic and is usually transitional enough to work with any decor style. But if you are traditional and are framing an oil painting, you might want a more elaborate style.
I have discussed dimensional art before. Of course you can’t directly frame most dimensional pieces, you could add some molding around your art that would appear to frame the grouping.
