Two German supermarket chains are expanding their footprints in the Augusta area. Lidl has plans to build another store at 4285 Washington Rd. in Evans. Aldi is set to bring a new store to south Augusta.

The rezoning proposal for a 3.18-acre parcel of land on Washington Road cites the Lidl project as 31,042 square feet with associated site parking lot and infrastructure.

There’s a variance rezoning proposal hearing this week for the purposes of building a retaining wall.

“This thing is still early stages,” said Ryan Martin of Jordan Trotter Real Estate, who brought the land’s owners to contract. “There’s a lot of moving parts until we can say this is a sure thing. If nothing goes wrong, we could see closing around the end of this year or in the first quarter of next year.”

There are currently two Lidl stores in the area; one at Washington Road and Alexander Drive and another off East Martintown Road.

Aldi was also approved to open a fourth store in the area in addition to its Martinez, Grovetown, and North Augusta locations.

The location proposed is currently occupied by the Medical Center Pharmacy at 3121 Peach Orchard Rd. It was approved 9-1 by the Augusta Commission Tuesday, with only Ben Hasan voting no.
