Two killed in Aiken shooting; victims identified

The second victim in a Saturday night shooting in Aiken has been identified as 40 year-old Stephan Poole of Aiken, according to a Monday email from Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables.

AIKEN – The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and Aiken County Coroner’s Office are investigating the deaths of two men Saturday.

Around 11 p.m. July 2, deputies were called to the Days Inn at 2654 Columbia Hwy. N. in response to shots fired, according to an email from Capt. Eric Abdullah of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

When they arrived, the deputies were sent to room 229 where they found a 39-year-old black male and a 40-year-old black male with apparent gunshot wounds. The two men were unresponsive. They were pronounced dead after Aiken County EMS arrived on the scene.

The 39 year-old has been identified as Barry Redding, according to an email from Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables; the 40 year-old victim has been identified, but his name has not been released pending notification of next of kin. Both men were from Aiken.

“We are in the early stages of this investigation and community assistance is important to
any investigation. We ask that if anyone has any information that would lead to the identity and
whereabouts of any suspects, we encourage them to contact the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office at
(803) 648-6811,” Abdullah wrote.

Both victims will be autopsied in Newberry, S.C. Wednesday, Ables wrote.

Officials said any suspect or suspects should be considered as armed and dangerous. People can provide
information anonymously through Midlands Crime Stoppers. The tip could earn a cash
reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for any
crime.
